Anderson, SC| The Anderson County Coroner’s Office said they are responding to Broadwell Mill Rd for a car washed downstream. Details are minimal at this moment. The scene details that the water on Gray Dr rose roughly 3-5 feet or more in the area. The area where the car was located was very dense. Reports are that crews have been trying to locate the victim and the car since Friday after the storm. A drone was seen in the air over the spot where the car was found. Two ATVs were on the scene, leaving a staging spot on Harbin Rd. Deputy Coroner Don McCown was seen on one of the ATVs. A Military Helicopter was seen bringing the victim up out of the very dense woods. The victim was taken to the airport, where an ambulance picked up the body and transported to the morgue. This story is very fluid. Stay with us for all the latest on this developing story.

Update| Coroner identified the victim. Read their statement below.

Anderson, SC (September 28, 2024, 10:10 Pm)

Greg Shore, Coroner advised that his office is investigating the death of a woman that was reported missing by her family to the Anderson Police Department Friday morning during the height of the storm.

The victim last spoke to her family around 07:30 am Friday. The victim’s phone was tracked by Anderson Police Detectives which located a signal around Harbin Road in Anderson, SC.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Team, Officers with the Anderson Police Department and the Anderson County Fire Department (Center Rock Station) initiated a search of the area and were unable to locate the victim during the initial investigation due to the severe flooding and heavy damage in the area. Using piloted drones from the Anderson Sheriff’s Office the victim’s vehicle was located today around 2:30 pm down river approximately 1 mile from Harbin Road overturned in the water. The victim was extricated from the wooded area via rescue helicopter deployed for the Helene disaster.

The victim has been identified as: KAREN DENISE MCCALL 60-year-old Female from Anderson, SC.

The victim died as a result of drowning secondary to her vehicle being swept away during the flooding of Harbin Road and the general area.

The investigation indicates that the victim was the unrestrained driver of Toyota Sedan that was traveling to pick-up a family member and apparently while attempting to travel on Harbin Road and was swept into the river during the heavy wind and flooding.

Coroner Shore advised that this is the fourth weather related death in Anderson County.

The investigation is on-going by the Anderson County Office of the Coroner, The Anderson Police Department, Anderson Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
