Piedmont, SC| Shortly after 8:00 a.m., Thursday Morning, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 102 Pine Court, Piedmont, SC, for a suspect who had assaulted his parents. 42-year-old Malcolm Nivens punched both of his parents, one of which is bedridden. The father was able to escape to get help. The Sheriff’s Office was able to get both parents out of the house. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and K-9 units were on the scene. Many attempts were made to get Nivens out of the house but were unsuccessful. The Sheriff’s Office fired multiple rounds of tear gas into the second floor of the house. The Sheriff’s Office sent a drone into the house to get a clear view of the layout and where Nivens might be barricaded. At some point, Nivens got a hold of the drone and put it in water in the bathtub to disable the drone operation. Carrie Miller, Public Information Officer for Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, stated that about 30 minutes after the tear gas was fired, the suspect started to come downstairs. Before Nivens surrendered, he fired several shots at Deputies. Nivens then fell down the stairs, resulting in a head laceration. Nivens was ultimately taken into custody with no other injuries reported. Niven is currently in custody at the Anderson County Detention Center, being held on assault, battery 2nd-degree charge, 4 Counts of assault and battery 1st-degree, Weapons / Possession of Firearm or Ammunition by person convicted of certain crimes, and Malicious / Malicious Injury to animals, personal property, injury value more than $2,000 but less than $10,000)—all bonds totaling $70,000.
